She was driving inland toward the capital when she had an accident.

"Interior" does not have a good equivalent in English. "Inland" means "away from the ocean, distant from the coast".

I think the Portuguese meaning here is "driving from inland toward the capital." But Thomas is right about the difficulties of translating "interior" to English. For example, any direction away from Belo Horizonte ("an inland capital", we could say) leads to the "interior".

An "inland capital" would be any capital away from the coast. Palmas is another inland capital, for instance. Fortaleza is a coastal capital.

Another option might be to use "the country", which, in the right context in English means "the countryside" or "rural areas". So you could say "She was driving from the country to the capital when she had an accident."
