Como dizer "eles se beijaram" em inglês

É como no caso de "I sit". Tenho que dizer "I sit myself"? Ao dizer "I sit", a gente entende que eu me sento. Não tenho que usar "myself" porque se entende que não estou sentando outra pessoa. (É possível, claro, dizer "I sit Mary" ou "I sit them".) Com o verbo beijar acontece o mesmo. "We kissed" quer dizer "Nós nos beijamos". Se os dois beijamos outras pessoas, dizemos "I kissed Mary and Terry kissed Paul." Mas se eles se beijaram, basta "They kissed." Pode confundir os falantes de outros idiomas, mas entendemos sem problema.

Jerry, I was not making fun of you. I often forget that there is a big difference between the humor of our cultures. I often laugh at my mistakes. (Last night, for example, I baked two pans of meatloaf. This morning I wonder what that strange smell was... Was someone fixing breakfast? No, it was the meatloaf I had forgotten to take out of the oven. What a dummy! LOL)

I understand your point of view, but language is not logical. We need to imitate other people, and in this case "We kiss" may not sound logical but we accept it because we have heard it and imnitated it all our lives. The reflexive is very common in Spanish, less common in Portuguese, and almost never used in English.

Eu já li material semelhante ao post inicial do Jerrydorien, mas o foco era para a possibilidade de erro:

"Eles se beijaram" --> é natural a gente querer traduzir literalmente, "they kissed themselves", o que estaria errado, ex.: Joao and Maria kissed themselves (o Joao beijou ele mesmo, e a Maria, idem).

Joao and Maria kissed each other - um beijou o outro (bem melhor!)

Joao and Maria kissed - de acordo com o Thomas é entendível, mas prefiro a opção com "each other".

I suggest a small Google test. Try each of these:

"when they kissed"
"when they kissed each other"

Vejam bem que a primeira opção, no Google, devia incorporar a segunda, mas raramente isso ocorre. Claramente existe uma alta proporção de falantes de inglês que não sentem a necessidade de adicionar "each other" a esse verbo.

Reparem que a expressão idiomática "Let's kiss and make up" não leva "each other". O "kiss", por si só, basta.

Tanto kiss quanto kiss each other são corretos e usados por falantes nativos do inglês. Leia mais em:
