Could also be "hope is to believe in the improbable and never, ever give up."
Improbable here is the chance of realization being in the realm of improbable, but then not impossible.
Could be something very difficult to our eyes, at first, but then someone does it. As a quote attributed to Nelson Mandela "It always seems impossible until it is done”.
To a layman 99.999% of something not happening is impossible, to a statistician (or an optimist laymen) it's just improbable, so he goes there and takes advantage of the 0.001% of chance of something happening.
And soccer players, athletes too, I think Zumsteim would say that.
