Cristiano Ronaldo is better (at playing soccer/football) than Messi at the moment, but he isn´t better player than the latter.
Ronaldo is a sensational player but has never been in the same league as Messi.
P.S. I am only dealing with the question, language-wise; no judgement of merit involved. Even because I am not a great soccer/football aficionado.
Anyway, as matter of fact, a fan of Messi or perhaps a commentator or other would use such wording.
