Ao invés de um agasalho grosso e quente optar por vestir-se com diversos agasalhos mais leves (uns sobre outros) formando camadas como as de uma cebola.
Onion-style (way of wearing clothes) is how you dress up layer by layer, hence the name onion.
Ex.:
1 – This winter instead of wearing a thick coat over my T-shirt and jeans, friends introduced me to what the locals here call as “Onion style”.

"Dressing like an onion" é uma expressão relativamente nova.
