No sentido de fazer sucesso. Ter conseguido algo com o próprio esforço mas não consegui por causa de alguma fatalidade. Falta de sorte.

I think that in English-speaking countries they don't ascribe bad outcomes like those to lack of luck, perhaps they would retrospectively say to themselves "though-luck" or "hard-luck" instead.

Sometimes cultures are different, and being immersed in the language changes our brains and ways, and this applies to learners from there as well (Exchange students, for instance). Anyway, it's not automatic, it's just that we have new parameters to choose from.
