Remember that "to hang" is slang, not standard English.
In formal English, you would expect to hear "to turn left, make a left turn, etc."

Márcio, how about "to hang a brodie"? What is the equivalent in Portuguese?
You drive fast, hit the brakes, and turn the steering wheel sharply. The rear of the car skids in possibly in 180 degrees (more or less). This is best done on a dirt road, not on asphalt.
Apparently, the name came from a boy called Brodie who jumped off a bridge many years ago. The original meaning was "to make a dangerous jump".

How about "bootleg" or "bootlegger" for "cavalo-de-pau"?

A bootleg turn is a radical driving maneuver intended to reverse the direction of travel of a forward-moving automobile by 180 degrees in a minimum amount of time while staying within the width of a two-lane road. This maneuver is also known as a smuggler's turn, powerslide or simply a bootlegger./Wikipedia
