Gol de vantagem é quando um time no primeiro jogo faz 3 x 0 e no jogo de volta ele pode perder por até 2 gols que no placar agregado fica 3 x 2 então ele tem 2 gols de vantagem.
Contexto:
- O Chelsea tem 2 gols de vantagem sobre o Valência.
- Real Madrid 3 gols de vantagem podendo perder por 2 gols de diferença que ainda assim é campeão.

Para dizer "vantagem", neste contexto, sugiro "lead".

From what I read in soccer blogs I decided to break the answer in two bits, so it follows (as per Brazilian championships - the first part):
A) a championship scoring goes as the following
L lose - 0 points
D draw - 1 point
W win - 3 points
- or
L lose - 0 points
D draw - 2 points
W win - 3 points

By the end of the season (or after a game, in some part of the season), one may want to know how his team is placed. His odds etc. So, he will see counts (per the above scoring) how many points his team has and how it is placed on the ranking.

Then comes part two of the answer.
Let´s say two teams are in a tie break (empatados em número de vitórias), then we are going to rank it by number of goals scored. Or more like, the difference (or differential) of them.
Wikipedia explanation goes:
If a team's points and goal difference are equal, then often goals scored is used as a second tiebreaker, with the team scoring the most goals winning.
