Shouldn't that be "Dividômetro"?

Só faltou a definição do Wikipédia:
Impostômetro (Debt Clock, em inglês) é um medidor estatístico para medir os impostos que um país paga em qualquer instante de tempo.

What I meant by that is that the public debt (the US debt, in this case -- a dívida pública) is not the same thing as the total of taxes (os impostos) that is actually paid to the government. But I see that your original reference shows the imputed level of individual debt if we were all required to instantly pay off the national debt. Fair enough.

But long-term debt (such as the mortgage on a house) is paid off over many years -- say 25 years. The same with a national debt -- if you wanted to pay it off. So the annual charge is 1/25th of the principal amount plus the annual interest rate. So what would be the annual cost to an American taxpayer if there was the need to pay off the national debt in that time frame? Here's an approximation. Assume the debt is 10 trillion dollars (it's actually about 13), the interest rate is 5% (annual) for the period (25 years), and the population stays at 300 million for the period (it will actually increase by some 1.5%, yielding more taxpayers over time). So:

Annual principal payment: 10 trillion/25 years = 400 billion/300 million people = $1,334.00
First year interest on 10 trillion: 10 trillion x 0.05 = 500 billion/300 million = $1,666.70
...
Lat year (25th) interest on remaining $400 billion x 0.05 = 20 billion/300 million people = $67.00

So, to pay off the debt in 25 years, the individual American would pay approximately $3,000 in year one, and about $1,400 in year 25. The total payment, over 25 years, per person, would be about $55,000.00. But that's over 25 years.

When you calculate it this way, it doesn`t look so daunting. Oh, and if Americans didn`t want to add to the debt over these intervening years, they`d just have to increase taxes a little bit more in order to pay for the same level of services currently available. Since Americans pay some of the lowest taxes on the planet, it`s doable.
