Como dizer "Me alistei no serviço militar" em inglês

Eu estava conversando com um amigo novaiorquino sobre assuntos casuais e ele me perguntou se eu já estava empregado, respondi que não e quando fui falar o motivo, não soube. Como eu posso dizer que eu me alistei ou irei me alistar no serviço militar?

For example, if you're talking to your friend and he asks,

"Why aren't you working right now?"

You could answer,

"I enlisted."

You don't have to say "in the military", because if you enlist, you are already enlisting "in the military" (armed forces). It would be like saying, "I joined the military in the military."

If you want to be specific, you could say:

"I enlisted (in the Army / Navy / Air Force / Marines / Coast Guard)"
