This sounds like a literal translation. "...six months to live" sounds much more natural.

AMPLIANDO O VOCABULÁRIO
I was remarking to Thomas that even native speakers can be thrown off in translation especially where there is only a minimal difference between two languages. This looks like a good example.
I was given 6 months to live.
He has just six months/a semester to go.
