Quando "metemos o pau" é porque não estamos satisfeitos o que nos faz criticar algo ou alguém com veemência. Algumas pessoas costumam dizer esculhambar.
Ex: Ela meteu o pau no serviço de péssima qualidade da secretária.
Ex: Costumo meter o pau em atendimentos ruins.
Ex: Ele mete o pau no sogro dele.
Meter o pau não significa necessariamente falar mal de algo ou alguém. Significa basicamente apontar os pontos negativos a medida que criticamos muito.
