Play-by-play announcer

Typically play-by-play announcers describe the game as it unfolds.
Ex.:
Rich Waltz is the play-by-play announcer and Tommy Hutton is the color analyst. (en.wikipedia.org)

Hello Zumstein!
Here is the best option to express as a native speaker "Commentator " which mean: A person on radio or television who describes and discusses news events, sports, books, or other subjects.
A football Commentator✔
A soccer Commentator ✔
Also known as: sports announcer or sportscaster, but It sounds so much better to me when I say: Football Commentator or a soccer Commentator.

Take it easy and keep learning.

I think most of the time the "play-by-play" would be the "narrador" in Portuguese, the one that describes (while broadcasted on the screen to the viewer), that is usual with NFL, NBA, etc, baseball games.
The "play-by-play" gives interesting details in real time, the color-analyst is a sports commentator that who assists the sports commentator (the play-by-play announcer). That is, he is an expert commentator, often filling when the play is not in progress.
Summing it up, there is the main commentator (the play-by-play announcer) and the assistants in the work (the color-analyst). Sometimes there are more than one color analyst.
More often than not, they also add a sideline reporter, near or on the field as well, mainly in the case of soccer games.
