The Portuguese-speaking learner have qualms about using the word miserable, it may evoke negative feelings/emotions since being very poor. Another connotation is to mention that someone is irresponsible, or spiteful, filthy, vicious.
In English it can be used in contexts in which the meaning is not such emotionally-charged towards negativity. So, it´s okay to use meaning "unhappy/sad", and not in a dramatic way:
I never want to hurt you and I never want to see you miserable, life is too short for that.
I never want to see you miserable.
