Eu diria: the wire attached to the lamppost broke/burst/collapsed after the tempest.

(severe*) storms brought down powerlines.

*severe - optional here. Anyway, the effect of the storm was seen/assessed after the weather phenomenon. The powerline snapped and fell onto the ground during the storm, though. The usual way, I mean.
