Great word, but note that it is much more specific than difficult time, difficult period, difficult phase, difficult stage, difficult moment, etc. Perhaps the subject lost his wife, has an illness in the family, cannot get into a university and is very distraught, etc. Those are bad things, but are they hardships? Everything depends on what the writer wanted to express. What is the context, right?
