Maybe:

Cover-up: Action that is taken to hide a mistake or illegal activity from the public.

Government sources denied there had been a deliberate cover-up.

Well, his uncle is a police chief and pulled some strings, that's why he didn't end up in the clinck?

For the second situation, it threw me a curve, I got a bit puzzled! If it involved the tasks it would be "cover for me".

My educated guess would be "have my back while I am away, will you?". Chances are that it would do.
Having one's back - (idiomatic) To be prepared and willing to support or defend someone. Source: Wikctionary
But I am not 100% sure if "defending" could be stretched in the sense of "concocting an excuse' for you not being there" (just in case).

Besides, if you mean to lessen the seriousness of someone's wrongdoing, you might also use "gloss over" or "whitewash (as suggested). Have one's back is a good one if you want to defend a person in difficult times. :)

Yet I will see what I can do to help your case, reinforcing/focusing on your strenghts, I will work out a way to keep/avoid you from being fired.
Could also be (a supervisor) to talk to the boss and work out scenarios to minimize the issue, argue in your defense, etc.

I know "working out a way" sometimes could be concocting an story to justify somebody's faults or fails, etc.

"Passar pano pra o seu caso" seria mas no sentido de "talk the boss into keeping the worker" (influenciar e convencer o patrão a não demitir) than to lie or distort facts (falsear a verdade dos fatos)...
