Thank you for your interesting comment
I like the term to negotiate the price (because it is more formal and business like without the negative connotation of "to haggle").
1. to bargain in a petty, quibbling, and often contentious manner: from http://thesaurus.reference.com/browse/haggle?o=100074
I also like the phrase "to strike a bargain/deal" or "to make a bargain/deal."
When using the verb "to bargain" it is often used with a preposition:
We bargained over the price.
http://thesaurus.reference.com/browse/haggle?o=100074 has examples for bargain for and bargain on.
Last weekend, I went to a flea market (outdoor private sale of used goods) that we happened to pass on our bike ride along the Rhein river. I had been looking for a tea pot. The shops sold them for around 40 euros, and I also found a plain one for 12 euros, but it was small. I thought I'd (=I would) try my luck at the flea market and perhaps get a bargain. Sure enough, I found an elderly woman who was selling a teapot with matching cups. She wanted 10 euros for the set, but I didn't have any room in my backpack for the cups. So, I asked if we could srike a deal for just the teapot. "No," she said. She didn't want to break up the set, but she had two other tea pots. I didn't want to haggle with an old woman, who was probably parting with treasured possessions because of the economic crisis, so I looked at her other pots. One was perfect, and I didn't have to bargain for it. It only cost 5 euros, and looked like an heirloom (a valuable item that is passed down from generation to generation in a family as an inheritance). Too bad I don't have room in my suitcase to bring it back home when I leave here. But, I am sure that the next tenant will appreciate it. The apartment needed a teapot, and it doesn't look like it was such a bargain.
