Essa televisão só pega no tranco.

Pegar no tranco = Dar uns sopapos, bater.

This tv only works if you shake it.

(I remember those days.)

A car you have to get it rolling and pop the clutch. Only works with manual transmission, though. An automatic needs a boost.

to clutch = to grab = agarrar, engatar
the clutch = embreagem

to boost = levantar, aumentar, inflar, etc.
a boost = empurrão, impulso
ego booster = qualquer coisa que aumenta a auto-estima (like an "A" in a test, or the kiss you never expected to get))

Ex:
O companheiro você pode me ajudar a fazer meu carro pegar no tranco?

Hold down the clutch (pedal). = Segurar/Abaixar o pedal (da embreagem).
Pop the clutch (pedal)./Release the clutch. = Soltar o pedal.

Pro carro ou "you jumpstart her/it" (chupeta de um carro pro outro) so the start engine makes the "main" engine catch.

Or you roll your car downhill (I mean, in an incline of sorts) and push-start it. Only manual transmission cars are capable of that, with automatic cars one just can´t do it.

To vending/dispenser machines we could say one smashes/bangs it hard to get the product.
For old TVs, I would say one of these: tap it, bang it slightly.
(anyway not a good idea any longer, today everything is so temperamental and overly emotional these days, even gadgets!)

Hey friend, can you help me run start my car?
Let's see if your car starts on the run.

Veja em http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index ... 635AAOgsM2

Poderiamos dizer também "help me give my car a running start" -- "running" age como adjetivo, e "start" é substantivo.

How about push-start it?

Hey folks,

The bar has just opened up and is quickly becoming the talk of the town. (meaning to be know, be a hit, become a go-to place to have a drink, etc)

The bar has just opened up and is  still a bit empty but it´s going to fill up quickly (it will become packed with patrons/visitors/guests), etc.

If your children aren´t taking his studies seriously, they might be in need of a "wake-up call", what about to enlighten them about consequences? Dock/discontinue that allowance or make them to find a job... Make them work or put some effort to get anything taken for granted.
