Here's another tack:
You can't seek/look for attributes in other that you lack.
You can't/shouldn't demand others to have personality traits that you lack.
You can't demand others to have personal characteristics that you lack.

With words like "shouldn't" (without 'demand' in the same sentence) in the first sentences we mean a piece of friendly advice, a neutral suggestion. Whereas the second set of statements might mean that you've gone too far! Could stand for criticism.
Don't ask for something you can't give!
