Hi, faeljs,
This is a great question!
There's something you can use in English to talk about things you did repeatedly in the past besides "used to". It isn't an obvious construction, but listen to native speakers talking about things they did over and over again, and you'll hear it:
Here's an example:
When I was a kid, we used to stay at my grandmother's house every year (we don't anymore). We would go to church every Sunday with her (a gente ia para a igreja) and after we would have lunch at her favorite restaurant (a gente almoçava no restaurante...). Then my brother and I would run around the neighborhood (a gente brincava pelo bairro...) and get dirty. My mom would always tell us we were wild kids (sempre dizia que a gente...), then she would make us take a bath before going to bed (nos forçava a tomar um banho...). Those were to best of times!
Putting that "would" before the verb gives it that repetitive context.
Your sentence might look like this, then:
Eu era um bom empregado. Quando eu ia entregar meus trabalhos eu sempre dava o meu melhor.
"I was a good employee. Whenever I would hand in my work, I would always try my hardest / I would always give it my best."
Again, great question!

Como não tenho 100% de certeza, também fiquei curiosa!
Aguardo comentários também!

My preference:
I was always a good worker (employee). When I handed in work, I would always do my best.
