Márcio, I should have thought of that. Good point! Slash and burn was common in Costa Rica, but I have not seen it done lately.
A small detail, but firemen (firefighters) refer to fires in the country as "burns". "The Waterman Canyon Burn" is, therefore, the wildfire that swept through Waterman Canyon.
If the burn is major, something that requires personnel and equipment from different departments and takes at least a few days to extinguish, you can be assured that someone is going to make and sell T-shirts as souvenirs for firefighters. I regret not getting a T-shirt from a huge burn in 2003 that forced the evacuation of thousands from the mountains where I lived.
