I had forgotten the real meaning of cul-de-sac. Taking Mary's reminder along with Marcio's sample sentence we come to the term "critical turning point" as another way of saying a "critical cul-de-sac."

A cul de sac is a circle at the end of a street. It is a nice place to have a house because you will not be bothered by traffic and its noise.

The dictionary lists cul-de-sac (\kuhl-duh-sak\) as a variant.

Google examples:

"Follow School Road until you hit a cul-de-sac in front of the school. If coming from north: Take Exit One off of I-91 in Brattleboro." (... until you reach...)

"Their relationship had hit a critical cul-de-sac" (= Their relationship had reached a critically dangerous point where it began to deteriorate, or so I think.)
