Hmm, na primeira frase eu diria 'applied' do verbo 'apply'.

To me it sounds like

Did you make yourself available to do that?
I lent myself to this ridiculous role.
And you still consent to it.

O verbo `condescend` me parece estar por trás da expressão 'se prestar'. But I didn't want to use condescend -- sounds too harsh.

Hey guys! Outro dia eu criei um tópico perguntando como eu poderia dizer o verbo "prestar" em inglês, com o contexto de condescender com algo inadequado ou desaconselhável. Pois bem, as respostas foram diversas mas não achei nenhuma satisfatória (mas agradeço de coração à todos que tentaram ajudar), perguntei para outras pessoas e ninguém soube me responder, então, decidi ir a luta e descobrir uma tradução mais adequada para o inglês. Eis o que descobri: A expressão "stoop to something/stoop to the level of doing something/stoop to someone's level" que traduzindo significa "se rebaixar ao nível de algo ou alguém", se encaixa perfeitamente com real significado do verbo "prestar" no contexto em que mencionei. Veja o que o The Free Dictionary diz a respeito: Condescend: To descend to the level of one considered inferior; lower oneself. See Synonyms at stoop;
Stoop to something: to do something that makes your moral standards lower.

I think what you meant was,

What a shame you were involved with this/that! (no interrogation mark)

Since it is a question after all, then it should be written as,

What a shame, are you involved with this/that?

Sometimes, finding words in the dictionary doesn’t mean that the word is commonly used in real life situations. Communication is about getting your point across and get it fast! Sure if you write a novel or a letter you might throw some words here and there but it has to be a word of “common use”, otherwise you just going to get your audience stack in a dictionary and maybe they’re not going to understand what you want. That is the reason English became the most spoken language in the World for doing almost anything that is related to communication. English is an easy and objective language. If you use the English Language objectively, you can get your point across and get it fast!

Falando nisso, eu bem que posso estar errado mais a palavra “presto” não é usada frequentemente no vocabulário diário do Brasileiro na forma que você está apresentando.

Porém eu já ouvi esta expressão,

Será que eu presto?
Será que aquele sujeito presta pra alguma coisa?
Me desculpe se eu não prestei muita atenção nas suas palavras. O barulho estava insuportável!

Agora, eu confesso não ter ouvido frequentemente a expressão, “Você se prestou” mais eu já ouvi a expressão, “Você se sujeitou a...”

“Como é que você se sujeitou a esta situação?

“How in the world you got yourself involved in this situation?”
“How did you get yourself involved into doing this/that?”
“I find hard to believe I got myself into this/that!”

Gente, obrigada por tentar ajudar, mas já descobri a resposta, postei aí em cima caso não tenham visto, é "stoop to something/stoop to the level of doing something". Leiam ali, para ver a explicação mais completa.

Word moder, aqui no Sul pelo menos, a expressão é bem comum no contexto em que citei.

Obrigado por clarificar e por levantar a questão! Sim, eu até pensei que poderia ser uma expressão regional. Eu não deveria esquecer que indo para o norte ou sul, cada Estado do Brasil tem a seu jeito particular de se expressar. Expressões como; Tu vais, Como está tu? Baah tchê, está um calor! Mais para o norte temos, Oh Xente, mais que calor! são expressões bem comuns.

Quanto a palavra “stoop”, sim, está no dicionário exatamente como você mencionou.

lower one's moral standards so far as to do something reprehensible: “Steve wouldn't stoop to thieving” “she was unwilling to believe that anyone could stoop so low as to steal from a dead woman.”
[ with infinitive ] condescend to do something.

Sure is there but I have not heard personally the use in a phrase yet. However, that does not mean is not used somehow in this type of situation.

Claro que não é a mesma coisa, mais eu já ouvi muito o uso da palavra “stood up to”, past and past participle of “stand” like, “I can't stand the way his sister talks to him."
