Hi,
Populations living in remote areas such as in the backwoods, suffer from a shortage of drinking water.
Good studies!

Backwoods = florestas longe de povoados
I would suggest "desert".
I would suggest "desert".
I suggest:
"population living in remote areas, like the savanna, suffer with a shortage of drinking water".
"The savanna is characterized by areas with a seasonal climate (about six months of dry season in the year) and consists primarily of grasses and shrubs. It is found in Africa, Australia and certain countries in South America, with peculiarities in each location. In Brazil it occurs mainly in the midwest and in parts of the southeast, south and northeast of the country". (www.brasil.gov.br)

Eu realmente não conheço como é a vegetação do sertão, mas um outro termo que pode ser bem apto é "scrubland".
My suggestion:
In the hinterlands.
Bye!
In the hinterlands.
Bye!
ATIVE O ENGLISH PLUS
"... suffer with" ou "... suffer from a shortage"?
Backcountry.
One more, "rural drylands" (there are urban drylands, I found, but we think of rural drylands meaning "sertão").
Suggestion:
Backland
Backland
I would use "Wilderness".

In fact, "wilderness" has more meanings than one, it could be "deserto" but it could also be "região intocada/reservas/área de natureza selvagem", etc.
To mean "sertão" it would have to be mentioning some place in Brazil for example. To areas south of the Equator, the word refer to a more verdant landscape and less severe, with a more varied terrain I would say, I mean more often than not. One can search on some search engine and see it for himself.
