Sorcery, witchcraft, spell - estão todos relacionados à feitiçaria, bruxaria. Achei todos muito "fortes" para serem associados à simpatia, afinal, muitas são puras "brincadeirinhas" inocentes que até os mais cristãos fazem, rs...

Complementando o que a Flávia disse, não há um equivalente exato para "simpatia" em inglês. Lembro-me do Houaiss dizer isto. Mas como há jeito para tudo neste mundo, minha sugestão é:

"Fazer simpatia para arranjar marido/esposa."
"Turn to magic to get married."

Fazer simpatia em inglês:Turn to magic

I´m glad you´ve read it. I´ve been trying to find a way to say "simpatia" in English for a long time! I think "turn to magic" might be appropriate, especially if the native speaker knows Brazilian culture. There's also "nem às custas de reza braba","vou fazer uma simpatia/reza", etc., for which I believe you can use the suggested expressions.

Estou lendo um livro, originalmente escrito em inglês, e me deparei com a seguinte passagem, que fala sobre teorias mágicas para a arte rupestre do Paleolítico : "...proposed that such art was used as sympathetic magic to give hunters skill and luck."

Eu tentei entender essa frase pelos conceitos usuais de simpatia,mas não faz sentido. Em português se diz às vezes que a arte rupestre tinha um caráter de fetiche, que não é distante do conceito da simpatia supersticiosa.
Seria a tradução para esse termo, simpatia (supersticiosa)?

Caso não seja isso. Outra solução é se voltar à origem da palavra simpatia em português e tentar buscar um correlato em inglês.

The word simpatia as superstição or magia, which does not often denotate a bad thing in Latin American countries can be translated as spell or (magic) ritual. If you use the word as encanto pessoal, you should translate it as charm; congeniality
