Hello, my friends from English Experts.

I would like to take this opportunity to make a few remarks about the following topics.

Topic A: Undergraduate degrees and association degrees
Topic B: The words technician and technologist in Brazil and other Portuguese-spoken countries.
Topic C: My reasons to choose the word technologian as a possible answer.

My objective is to present some references in order to help the future generation to use the English Experts Forum as a study guide.
I apologize in advance since the topic has already been in discussion or, if you find remarks which had already been answered.

Shall we start?
_

TOPIC A - Undergraduate degrees and association degrees

First of all, an undergraduate degree is a colloquial term for an academic degree earned by a person who has completed undergraduate courses. The formal terms are first degree or simply degree.

In the United States, the first degree courses are usually offered at institutions of higher education, such as colleges or universities. The most common type of these first degrees are associate's degree and bachelor's degree.

Bachelor's degree (a.k.a. Baccalaureate) typically takes at least three or four years to complete. In some other educational systems, undergraduate education is post-secondary education up to the level of a master's degree; this is the case for some science courses in Britain and some long-cycle medicine courses in Europe. These degrees can be categorised as basic or first professional degrees.

Undergraduate degrees are known as graduação in Brazil.

Brazil follows the major traits of the continental European system; free public schools are available from kindergarten up to postgraduate degrees, both as a right established in Article 6, caput of the Brazilian Constitution and as a duty of the State in Article 208, Items I, IV and V, of the Brazilian Constitution.

In 2001, Brazil added "Technology" as a undergraduate degree. Technology's degree varies between 2 to 3 years of full time studies to complete. This degree takes a shorter time period to obtain, with specific professional courses aimed at providing highly specialized knowledge (e.g., agribusiness technical degree, tourism management degree, etc.)

According to ISCED (International Standard Classification of Education) 2011, an associate degree (diploma de associado) is the first level of an undergraduate degree, corresponding to the level 5. The other degress we have in this level are the foundation degree and the higher national diploma (a.k.a. Diploma of higher education or certificate of higher education).

The associate degree is nothing more than a type of degree. The purpose of this course is to provide students with basic technical and academic knowledge, in addition to developing the skills they need to work or study in the chosen field. In short, an associate degree would be something like the technical courses we have here in Brazil.

There are many undergraduate students with an associate deegree in the USA, but you can also find them in parts of Canada, Hong Kong, Australia and the Netherlands. Other countries have similar programs, but with a different name, such as foundation degrees in the United Kingdom.

In the USA, associate degrees are available at various types of colleges, including community colleges, junior colleges and technical colleges, as well as associate colleges from universities and university institutes.

For some students, the associate's degree provides preparation for a bachelor's degree, while for others it is a qualification in itself, helping to improve job prospects compared to just completing high school.

Now, I believe you would like to know the differences between an associate degree and a bachelor's degree. Right?

If that is the case, you should read this article.

TOPIC B: The words technician and technologist in Brazil and other Portuguese-spoken countries.

Here, in Brazil, we have three words: técnico, tecnologista and tecnólogo which are included by the Houaiss Dictionary of the Portuguese Language and Aurélio Portuguese Dictionary.

The first word, técnico means technician. In these dictionaries, we find the following meanings:

(1) someone who is versed in an art or science; (Example: the opinion of a technician).
Synonyms: specialist (especialista); expert (perito(-a));

(2) [sport] A professional in charge of tactically training and guiding a sports team.
Synonyms: coach (treinador(-a)). (Examples: football coach; the new coach of the volleyball team);

(3) sound technician (técnico de som) in a film crew, the supervisor of all sound recording work; a sound designer (sonoplasta).

However the other two words, tecnologista and tecnólogo are translated as tecnologist.

Both dictionaries, Houaiss and Aurelio are considered great Portuguese Language references and gives the word tecnologista as a synonym or variant of tecnólogo.

In other words, although we commonly translate tecnologista and tecnólogo as technologist, we have differences related to the job market. In short, a tecnologista is a job and a tecnólogo is someone who has a degree in Technology.

It should be remembered that the word técnico is used as a general term and also as a designation of a given profession in Brazil and Portugal; however, the term tecnólogo has emerged in Portugal to refer to certain professional qualifications achieved by attending a course or stages of some courses related to Technology. So, we use the word tecnológo for specific situations in Portugal compared to Brazil. As far as I know, the word is precisely related to IT and medical fields in Portugal and other Portuguese-spoken countries.

So, the translation of a technologist is liable to tecnólogo and tecnologista, depending on the job offered or the key operating activities in a company.

_

TOPIC C: My reasons to choose the word technologian as a possible answer.

In order to avoid mistakes, especially in situations we need to emphasize the differences between tecnologista and tecnólogo, I recommend the use of the word technologian, which can be translated into tecnólogo(-a) without misunderstandings.
According to Ulisses de Carvalho and Karina Fragozo, the language is always changing itself. New words come up and others lose their meanings over the years. If it is happening with the expresion absolutely, the same happens to the word tech and some of its morphological derivations. That is the case of the word technologian. As I have researched, I realized that word is used to help people who has a degree in Technology to define themselves better, emphasizing how much they like to improve themselves in that field and also help the society. In my opinion, it is limited to English-spoken countries in Asia and Africa, however, it is a good option for scholars and job applicants to show how much they can persuade people with their oratory or show their interest in Technology.

Just for curiosity, the word technologian cames from The Technologian, which was Tech's first student publication of the Georgia Institute of Technology (a.k.a. Georgia Tech), in the USA. The publication ran for a short time in 1891. The fluidity of language can amaze even the grammar experts. Extincted or old-fashioned words like jargogle and freck still arouse the interest of the scholars about the reason for their disappearance. We cannot forget other words which are used by literary critics and poets as gramophone or phonograph - which are mostly known as record players - and ludibrious - which has been replaced by mockery.

I wonder if my co-workers would laugh at me if I used an excuse like "I am more than a technologist in this company; I am a technologian. My achievements are the proof" to receive a raise.

Quite poetical, don't you think? :)

Note: A diploma takes about a year or two to complete. Like technical or vocational certificates, diplomas focus on a specific skill or field, without the general education coursework required by a degree. Diploma and certificate programs are often offered in the same fields. Diplomas are usually a little more intensive and detailed than certificate programs and may take longer to complete. Diplomas are also common in the healthcare field, like dental X-ray diploma programs. Other examples of diploma programs include areas like welding, HVAC, electrical power distribution, diesel equipment mechanic, and more. Note that sometimes when people refer to technical diplomas, they are using it as a catchall term for a document that shows someone graduated from a school or received a degree, like a high school or college diploma. When people refer to a diploma certificate, that is often what they mean. However, a technical diploma can also be used to describe a diploma.

Obrigado Felik, eu estava atrás desta resposta.

MEKAKIL,

I apologize in advance if I missed something but I somewhat disagree to you.

As fas as I comprehend, technologists are graduates with an Technology degree while students who complete two-year engineering technology, related to medical, IT or any other associated programs are called technicians. In other words, technologist is a bachelor's degree while technician is the term to refer to those students who have the associate degree or just have finished any other first degree program related to Technology.

In short, according to ISCED:

TECHNOLOGIST = A bachelor's degree >> Undergraduate degree or first degree (Level 6).
TECHNICIAN = An associate degree >> Undergraduate degree or first degree (Level 5).
Oi Ricardo,

Pelo contrário! Eu acho que você está totalmente certo. E acho que meus comentários foram de igual semelhança com sua linha de pensamento.

Um abraço.
OI! Nanyonomichi,

Sim, "Tecnólogo", também não é certo traduzir como "undergraduate"!
Acho que o RICARDO, têm explicado bem!
Dar uma olhadinha.

Um Abraço.

Sim. Como o Ricardo F. Bernardi falou:
"TECHNOLOGIST = A bachelor's degree >> Undergraduate degree or first degree (Level 6)."
Outro ponto é que após formado e obtendo o grau de tecnólogo a pessoa pode continuar seus estudos fazendo mestrado ou doutorado, que são pós-graduações stricto sensu, como também MBA e outras especializações lato sensu, o que não é possível tendo um associate degree. Associate degree é técnico. Curso superior de tecnologia é bacharelado tecnológico, i.e., BTech. (Ref. pt.wikipedia)
