Para dizer velório em inglês, usa-se wake. No entanto, na prática, usa-se bastante também funeral, no mesmo contexto de velório.

In a death-watch, the person can be alive or dead but usually the person is alive but expected to die soon.
Wake and death-watch are sometimes interchangeable and sometimes they are not.

And "velório"? Is the person dead, or can the person still be alive?

If the dead sprang up from his coffin, it surely would cause a commotion.

In that case, "death watch" is probably not the word you want. From what little context we have, I'd have used "wake". The lady dies, "she lies in state" (visitors arrive to pay homage to her, to say goodbye), and then she is buried.

Let's say a man is quite ill and expected to die within a day or two. Let's say a prisoner is going to be executed tomorrow. Then I'd use "death watch". Yes, it is possible to have a "death-watch" after a death, but "wake" is the preferred word.

Em português, podemos "velar" alguém vivo, mas normalmente é usado no sentido de "velar o sono de alguém" (watch someone sleeping), mas não consigo pensar em um verbo específico para alguém que visita uma pessoa que está prester a morrer.

A "viewing" is a time when the body is present and friends and family can come and say last farewells. "Visiting hours" are usually a set time when friends and family can gather to commiserate and share recollections of the dead person's life.
