Como o verbo se comporta depois das conjunções em Inglês?

Sabemos que os verbos após as preposições entram em forma de gerúndio. Mas a Minha Dúvida não é em relação as preposições e sim as conjunções.

Na pergunta: Can he read and write? Percebemos que o write passou ser um verbo infinitivo sem o "TO". MInha dúvida é se todos os verbos após todas as conjunções de comportam como infinitivo no exemplo acima.

You will not win but lose. Aqui vemos outra vez que o verbo lose está no infinitivo após a conjunção "but".

Eu estou certo na mina observação ou não? Se eu estiver certo, Porque na frente do than fica no gerúndio sendo than uma conjunção segundo os dicionários no exemplo a seguir: I'd rather play ball than playing tennis.

Porque não than play tennis?

Desde já muito Obrigado.

There are many possibilities, infinitive -ing will be used in some cases:
In spite of being friends they drifted apart.
In this sentence the conjunction has a preposition as part of it: "of"

They are talking and walking at the same time.
The conjunction "and" accept the same tense both before and after, in this example we have progressive, not infinitive.

When we use the conjunction "and" adding items there's no use for the particle "to" as the simbol of infinitive. We say that is the "bare infinitive":
We walk and talk. While the write and read and kids play and sing...
