Construção de interrogativas sem DO

Hello guys!
Queria saber porque não tem o DO no início da interrogativa em um texto que estou estudando: You know what the challenge is?
Não deveria ser Do you know what the challenge is?
Tks!

The so-called conversational deletion, it´s not much used in written English, but you can see that all the time in Novels, etc. (wich is some sort of
informal/colloquial English, let´s say so.)

The auxiliaries "do" and "does" are extensively used in all varieties of English to form questions. However, in spoken English, omitting secondary words from the beginning of sentences (auxiliary verbs, articles, possessives, conditionals) happens a lot. This is sometimes known as "conversational deletion".

In fact, you see such "deletions" and colloquial ways all the time on novels. But then, many teachers don´t want it taught (sometimes even discussed) in classes, because many regard that as non-standard English (exam-wise, for instance) and they, perhaps don´t have enough time to cover all minutes of English, such slangy/man of the street ways of speaking, etc.
So, the learner when discuss the subject, he is left in a kind of "Yo no creo en no standár inglés, pero que los hay los hay". That is, the learner has to learn it by his own, because it doesn´t make it to the books. More often than not, but I am not saying that all teachers or all classes are equal, and not criticizing our masters. Just commenting a fact that happens.
