The motorcycle was invented simultaneously by an American and a Frenchman, who didn't even know each other's work while researching in their own countries. Sylvester Roper, from USA, and Louis Perreaux, from the other side of the Atlantic ocean, manufactured a steam-powered bicycle in 1869. Back then, the ships and the steam-powered locomotives were already common; steam-powered buses were working normally in the USA, France and England. The experiments to adapt a steam engine to light vehicles were succeeding one another. Even with the progress of the gasoline engine, the steam engine experiments continued until 1920, when they were definitively abandoned.
