“In your opinion what factors contribute to a good movie?”

In my opinion, there are many factors that combined together can contribute to the quality of a movie. First of all, I enjoy original plots, with a story which contains a little or nothing of clichés and that goes becoming richer and surprising along the movie, also, the major points of it has to be well explained (because believe me, a lot of movies leave many central points of the plot unexplained or confusing, mostly of this cases occur in book adaptations, when the director can’t cover the fully essence of the book). Then, not only has the story to be good, but also the movie’s photography, the places where the shoots take place, the sensations it can pass… I’m sure the photography is a key to determine which the film will be melancholic, romantic, and other things. Depending on the movie, it’s so important as is the story itself.
For me, these are the two basic elements that I value when watching a movie, of course there are other factors like the actuation (the third most important), the music and so on. But I think their powers on the movie depends a lot on the story, making this one the basis for the other characteristics that can improve it.

In my opinion, there are many factors which, combined, together [advérbio redundante] can contribute to the quality of a movie. First of all, I enjoy original plots, with a story which contains few or no clichés [gramática] and that becomes (gradually) richer ["goes becoming" é uma tradução livre do português] and (more) surprising as the movie progresses. Also, [nova frase], the major points (of the plot) have [concordância com "points"] to be well explained, because, believe me, a lot of movies leave many central points of the plot unexplained or confusing, mostly in book adaptations, where the director can’t cover the full essence of the book. Then, not only does the story have [inversão usa o auxiliar do tempo empregado] to be good, but also the movie’s cinematography, the places where the shoots take place, the sensations it can convey etc. I’m sure the cinematography is a key to determining ["to" age como preposição e requer o gerúndio] whether the film will be melancholic, romantic etc., among other things. Depending on the movie, it can be as important as the story itself. For me These are the two basic elements that I value (the most) when watching a movie. Naturally, there are other factors, like the acting (the third most important), the music and so on. However, I think their effects on the movie depend a lot on the story, which constitutes the basis for other characteristics to build upon [estilo / naturalidade].

For lacking of a better knowledge of the subject I can´t comment much, for example, I found "photography'' a bit tricky to comment of.
"Photography, light, and cinematography" are a bit intersectives in sense, I think. Anyway, I would use "the movie lights/cinematography" here, and to me "light(s)" would have more to do exterior scenes/photography. When it comes to interior and exterior lighting then cinematography/movie light would be more comprehensive.
It´s my impression, one perhaps can use all of these words, who knows? I will leave it to guys into movie-making, or movie aficionados etc.

A bulk of its many awards and nominations, including two Oscar victories, were for on screen performances. What is less recognized is the positive effect that the locations, cinematography, lighting and score have on the atmosphere of the film.

Correction:

Of course there are other factors like the actuation the acting.

Then, not only the story has to be good, but... [word order]

when the director can’t cover the fully essence of the book
When the story plot isn´t loyal to the book´s, doesn´t get it right, or isn´t loyal to the it, then it´s not the director to blame, since the story adaptation has already come to his hand, he only directs.
Of course, if he directs in a bad way, chances are the movie as whole be butchered, but it´s not his business to tinker the plot.
It´s my thinking here, though.

Hello Paulo, I really appreciate the help, I read the things you posted and they were very useful. It happens to be that the word Photography, when refering to movies, is commonly used in Portuguese* and has closest meaning to Cinematography in English. So I just made a mistake by using a term that doesn't have the same meaning in both languages. Please take a look at these articles to see their correlation:

*: In our language we can also use the word Cinematografia, which is a direct translation of Cinematography, but it looks like Fotografia is more used anyway.

About the correction, when I said "when the director can’t cover the fully essence of the book", I was refering myself to the person who adapts the book plot to a movie plot, can be the director (sometimes we have a writer-director) or the writer or both. Looks like I just made another mistake by not being clear with words.

It happens, no sweat! ha ha.
Aan while at it, it´s hardly surprising that they made a film named "Lost in Translation", the film title itself was lost in translation sometimes! In Portugal its version was "Love In a Strange Place"!
I am no movie expert, but it felt like fitting a square peg in a round hole, even to a dummy on the subject like me! Anyway, I can watch a film and relate to it or get the plot! he hee. :)
Thanks for your feedback and the references.
