Despite (the fact that); in spite of (the fact that)

Todos as quatro expressoes significam a mesma coisa. In spite of the fact that é uma frase longa e desnecessaria.

Went shopping despite the bad weather.
Went shopping in spite of the bad weather.

É... mas nem sempre quando se pode, por exemplo, utilizar "Despite", pode-se utilizar "Despite the fact that"...

Concordo com Paulo. Despite/In spite of the fact that trata-se de uma combinação prepositiva longa e, na maioria das vezes, desnecessária. Os exemplos com despite e inspite of bastam por si só.

They went to school in spite of the bad weather.

a. Despite
- Despite all our efforts to save the school, the authorities decided to close it. [Apesar de todos nossos esforços para salvar a escola, as autoridades decidiram fechá-la.]

b. In spite of
- We went out in spite of the rain. [Nós saímos apesar da chuva.]

c. Despite the fact that
- She went to Spain despite the fact that her doctor had told her to rest. [Ela foi para a Espanha apesar do médico ter dito para ela repousar.]

d. In spite of the fact that
- Kelly loved her husband in spite of the fact that he drank too much. [Kelly amava o marido apesar dele beber demais.]


Na minha opinião, acrescentar "the fact that" a "despite" e "in spite of" pode ser bastante útil. Nos exemplos acima, se retirarmos "the fact that", não há como utilizar apenas "despite" ou "in spite of" sem uma mudança maior nas sentenças. Com isso, "the fact that" amplia e auxilia as formas de uso das expressões "despite" e "in spite of".

She went to Spain despite her doctor had told her to rest. [Incorreto sem "the fact that"]
Kelly loved her husband in spite of he drank too much. [Incorreto sem "the fact that"]

Veja que retirando "the fact that" sem mudar as sentenças os usos são incorretos. Então, uma frase construída originalmente com "the fact that", não pode ficar sem esta estrutura e continuar correta sem ser refeita ou readaptada.

Não pode retirar. Neste exemplo, "the fact that" é necessário.

Mais dicas: Quando usar "despite the fact that"/"in spite of the fact that" ou apenas "despite"/"in spite of''.
