Dicas para Lidar com Alunos com Dificuldade de Aprendizagem

Imagem
Oi Pessoal!

Please, help me!

Hi there, Keninha.

First of all, the fact that someone at the age of 60 is taking an English course must suggest that she likes it somehow. At this juncture people do things they like (not to make money, to please others, etc, and I talk about the average people.)

Maybe pictures would help, maybe some easier lessons would work (then people get motivated by doing well in tests, by sensing that they can, etc. Perhaps even "summoning" some relative or friend of her could boost her confidence, or then it could be the pauses between grammar and other kinds of tools.

Say, grammar 10 or 15% of the time and the rest with other educational devices (even a walking around the square nearby, etc, speaking in English whenever you can.

Some tutor/teachers appeal to emotion, they make the learner "picture" his success; for instance by imagining in advance what they can do in the future, sing that Beatles song or to sing Purple Rain etc...? To know what Julia Roberts lines in that movie picture? And so on and on and on.

Always check the development (perhaps keeping tabs on the topics), so you get back to some topics now and then. That is, you can wedge a given topic
In your conversation/lesson on purpose. Thus, you go ahead but "not leaving that topic behind".

Another point is, you don´t always paper and ink to teach some things. For example, to show that "went" is verb to be (in past form.)

Respect her pace and limits, though. If all that fails, you still have three alternatives:
  • Refer to another teacher (maybe one that is qualified exactly to that task, if any.),
  • Work with help of other professionals (psychologists, etc)
  • And/or establish how far she can go (perhaps there´s an optimal point where she would be satisfied - English enough to talk to her grandson that is coming from abroad...
And, be aware that sometimes one have to choose their battles, call it quits, (in a gracious way, of course)

In the second case, perhaps you need to assess the situation as a whole. A little query may be necessary, what about to dig deeper? Would the girl be studying just to please her parents, boyfriend, family? Would she been putting her money where her heart is, or would someone else being paying for your lesson and time?

Would she have some kind of problem? Would she have some kind of attention deficit or some degree of dyslexia? Would what she learned been acquired from poor teaching?

Also try to make a schedule, where you plan the topics of FCE (for example) and tick the topics covered, compare with the remaining topics and try to
Get a 'promise" to get some of the remaining covered in time. Use also the emotion, appeal to that "travel abroad", that "making friends and talking in English with them."...but only after having aced (or at least not flunked) the FCE.

After some real progress, praise, but don´t praise just for the sake of it (anyway, don´t let a good opportunity pass when the student achieve.)

I hope some people that are into Education/teaching give more pieces of advice you (to us). I am no teacher or such, these are just some life experience that kicked in. Hence, it´s a bit of just based in empirical observation.

I wish you luck.

Hi Keninha!

Se for esse o caso "I totally agree with PPAULO".

She does like English or need something about this wonderful language. Maybe you should try a different approach, pictures like PPAULO suggested would be wise. This way it is possible to teach grammar slowly.

When I studied at Cultura Inglesa this kind of activity was very much used when training speaking skills, but I guess you can use that to teach anything you want. Auxiliaries "be, do, does, did, will, would, modals, perfect tenses."

From my point of view you should find out the student's strength so that you could use this piece of information in favor of the learning process. If she is good at reading or speaking, focus on them. Use simple listening at the beginning of the class (simple exercises of listening 20 or 30 seconds of very clear samples).

A piece of advice... "do not try to teach too much grammar, because if the student has not been studying lately this is going to be a problem."
Once you opt for speaking as an important tool you could teach grammar without being straight to the point, subtly.

Describe this picture.
Useful structures:
Could/must be;
I think (guess) it is... That is...
I think so/ I don't think so.
I (totally) agree/disagree with you.
Make up some questions considering this picture/photo.
You can ask questions and work on the answers...

There are lots of possibilities, however, do not compare that student to the other, specially younger students. Different students learn in different ways. ;)

As for the second student of yours.
"Are the sudents tested before starting studying there? "

This question I made due to the fact that, according to the way you described, there is a huge problem of structure.

Auxiliaries are obviously one of the first things we are supposed to know/learn. If she doesn't master that it is high time she did. In case she didn't your main role should be to correct that flaw. Exercises on verb tenses and word order should be provided. I guess the point is not the certificate. Even if she passes/passed some tests this is pointless if her English is broken or too poor. Maybe it was just a stroke of luck.

Just to clarify I am not an English teacher and I apologize in case I am giving you bad advice.
I hope I could help (somehow).

Cheers! :geek:
Thanks guys! I'll try your suggestions and then I come back to tell you if they worked or not... ;)

And try to get information if possible, with someone else that has crossed that bridge before. That is, someone that have had that experience in his/her life and be willing to share it with you. We will be keeping our fingers crossed for you.

Cinnamon e PPaulo, ótima visão do todo!

Vamos manter contato sim!
