Eu estava praticando e ai vi essas frases na pagina e queria sabe qual seria a diferença entre on x on top of.

- The paintbrush is on top of the table.

On é usado para indicar que algo está tocando na superfície de algo.
On the top of indica que algo está no topo de alguma coisa.
Nos dois exemplos pode usar os dois. Porque se algo está na mesa fica, implícito que está no topo da mesa.

I agree with Ney. Just out of personal writing style I would use "on the table" most of the time, because "on top" somehow suggests to me something more vertical and being above my height (or lower a little bit). On top of a wardrobe is more likely to me, just for illustration´s sake.
So, to the paintbrush case, I would go with "on", plus being more economical with the words. But technically, both can be the same, of course.
But again, it´s just me, it could be used both ways.
