Hi, Lazumbra!
Pelo que sei, do e take, com exam, não têm a menor diferença em termos de uso. Você pode:
take an exam
ou
sit an exam
ou, ainda,
do an exam
Seu professor vai prepare the exam.
E, se você se sair bem, vai pass the exam (tomara!
Hope that helps!

Lazumbra,
Complementando,
Para mim, em inglês americano, "take" é mais comum do que "do" no contexto relativo a "fazer" teste/prova.
Bons estudos!

Pessoal,
Isso pode causar um pouco de confusão. A minha preferência seria por "take an/the exam."
The doctor does the exam(ining). The patient is examined.
The lab technician does the test(ing). The materials are tested.
Students take a test. They are tested.
The teacher gives (conducts, holds, etc) an exam. Students take (sit for) the exam.
Teacher: "I have to do (to prepare) an exam for tomorrow."
Student: "That means I have (to take) an exam tomorrow."
Não afirmo isso rigidamente. Somente um conselho. Regards
