Especially X Mainly: Qual a diferença?

Apesar de eu não ter a resposta para sua dúvida, veja um tópico relacionado ao vocabulário do seu post: especialmente-specially-x-especially-t6575.html

Não esquecer de principally, também sinômino de mainly.

Estive fazendo umas comparações em meu dicionário e notei que, invariavelmente, podia substituir mainly por principally e vice-versa praticamente sem nenhuma perda de sentido.

Em outras palavras, onde cabe um mainly mui provavelmente caberá um principally.

"a word learned solely or principally from reading and often understood without knowledge of its customary pronunciation" (book word) - Aqui podemos substituir o principally por um mainly ou por um especially, sem perda nenhum de sentido.

"a junior in a business or occupation who is engaged principally in learning" (cadet) - Idem idem idem.

"a chalklike concretion mainly of urate of sodium found especially in and about the small joints of persons suffering from gout" - Notar aqui um mainly e, em seguida, um especially, ambos empregados numa mesma linha. Aqui poderíamos trocar ambos de posição, absolutamente sem nenhuma perda de sentido.

"demanding mainly physical force rather than intellect" -- Nessa definição temos um mainly que poderia se transformar num especially sem nenhum problema.

Se não estiver redondamente enganado, fica ao nosso bel-prazer empregar aquele ou aqueloutro, principalmente (mainly/especially) nessas circustâncias.

Curiosamente, o meu dicionário não traz no bojo definição nenhuma que contenha o advérbio chiefly, outro sinônimo de mainly, principally, especially e, mais, primarily. Haja sinônimo!

This is an interesting example, and I'm going to disagree a little bit. I don't think switching "mainly" and "especially" works very well. You could use "mainly" in both places ("chalk-like concretion, mainly of urate of sodium, found mainly in") but it's best to avoid the repetition.

mainly = principally = primarily = chiefly; chiefly is probably the most rarely used of the three
especially = in a manner that deserves special emphasis


PS: your language has plenty of synonyms too!

Certo, dlr, mas se usássemos um "principally" no lugar do "mainly", alteraria o sentido da definição?

That would be ok. The more I think about it, you could use "especially" in place of "mainly" if there were a verb before it. I think this sounds ok:

"a chalk-like concretion composed especially of urate of sodium found primarily/mainly/principally in .."
