Por exemplo: The dedication factor is the key to success. Understanding and expressing it ...

Ou em vez de "Understanding and expressing it" eu poderia colocar simplesmente "To understand and express it"?

"Dedication is the key factor to success" would be more likely (or "...is a key factor to success", unless you have initiated a list of factors, so in the previous paragraph you have expressed which factors go along with dedication: willpower, consistency, resiliency, motivation, inspiration, emotional intelligence (which could encompass teamwork skills), etc.
Still, I wouldn't expect the article "the" before such traits, and not before the word "dedication" as well.

The second part of the question: understanding and applying it is crucial in life/in one's career... (here in a general way).
To talk about a person or institution, that is, more specific in kind: the researcher should understand and apply it in so many ways.

But then, from a learner like you, others might improve it and provide further insights.
