Estrutura: Ask if they [thought] height [was] important

I decided to go out and ask some ladies if they thought height was important.

Estou tentando entender como essa estrutura (If they thought height was important) funciona no Inglês.

Isso seria por acaso o subjuntivo? Se fizermos uma tradução literal, seria como:

Eu decidi sair e perguntar a algumas garotas se elas achavam que a altura era importante.

No entanto nós Brasileiros não falamos assim. Como montar essa estrutura e quando devo utilizar?

Direct Speech>> "Where is Dunkin' Donuts?"
Reported Speech>> I asked (them) if they knew where Dunkin' Donuts was.
>> Eu perguntei (a eles) se sabiam onde estava / era o Dunkin' Donuts.

Direct Speech>> "Where does Peter live?"
Reported Speech>> She asked him where Peter lived.
>> Ela perguntou(-lhe)onde Peter vivia.

B) YES / NO QUESTIONS

Direct Speech >> "Do you think height is important?"
Reported Speech>> I asked some ladies if they thought height was important.
