Etymological orign of "ham" in,say, Nottingham.

Hello,everyone!

Well, recently, I was reading a book and ,in one of its pages, there was the name of this british city: Nottingham. This made me remember the name of others cities of England that have the same ending (...ham), for instance: Brimmingham, Durham...(Gotham? =D)
Then a question came to my mind: what is the orign of this suffix "ham ", and what does it mean?
Also, is the expression above " came to mind" used correctly?
Thanks,guys!

-ham means homestead, settlement. It comes from Old English.

Here's a nice list of the origins of names: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ge ... nd_Ireland
