Exercício: Gap filling exercise

Flavia.lm 1 10 100
Pessoal,

Do meu homework:

(5) _______ now, few species had been removed from the register and when they (6) _____, it was usually because (7) _______ had finally become extinct.

Eu respondi:
(5): Until - apesar de achar que 'until now' não concorda com "had been removed"
(6): were? had? be?
(7): they

Flávia,

Sugestão:

Until, were, they

Until now few species had been removed from the register and when they were it was usually because they had finally become extinct.

Boa sorte!

Eu achava que cabia um had lá. I think the verbs must match syntactically and semantically if and when they share the same object.

"They had left the hard work for Jones to do, and when they had, they found themselves in an even bigger troublesome spot." (Concocted example)

"Carl and Jung had given several gold nuggets away, and when they had, they found out a few of the emeralds went (had gone?) missing." Does a had gone really go here?

Of course, you may make it simple by recasting the sentences.

Please advise and correct me! ;)

Until now, few species have been removed from the register and when they are it is usually because they have finally become extinct.

Mas peguei o gabarito ontem e a resposta correta é "were" (ponto pro Donay!)

Flávia, I agree with your reasoning. It all hinges on whether "until now" is indicating a change in method, or a continuation of an established practice. If a change, then cast it in the past perfect; if a continuation, then use the present perfect. It's the larger context that dictates which one works better. Regards

Flávia,

Sim, pode confundir mesmo. Mas o racicínio em português ajuda, veja:

Until now, few species had been removed from the register and when they were it was usually because they had finally become extinct.
