Função de "being" em "still being held"

Unlike the 171 men still being held at the notorious prison, we, two reporters and our escort, were detained for just 30 minutes. But the experience offered a useful lesson in how a relic of the war on terror is getting in the way of the Pentagon's efforts to transform America's military.

Eu gostaria de entender o udo do verbo "to be" na frase "still being held" porque quando traduzimos ele não aparece: "ainda encarcerados". Sendo assim, poderíamos omiti-lo sem prejudicar o sentido da frase?

Simon,

1. Tradução:

'''Unlike the 171 men still being held at the notorious prison...''
"Diferentemente dos 171 homens que ainda estão sendo mantidos na prisão notória...''

2. O "Being" poderia ser omitido, na minha opinião; com quase nenhuma mudança no sentido.

The change is subtle, indeed, but real. "Still being held" means that they remain in prison even at the time of the writing of the statement. "Still held" does not clearly establish that this persists up to the time of the writing.

There is a preference for this continuous passive form in good English, when we want to stress continuity to the present. You can see the difference in, for example,

I am still questioned about the incident. (there is no clear sense of persistence)
I am still being questioned about the incident. (this is persistent)
