Great minds think alike

dlr 1
Is there a saying in Portuguese similar to this one? "Great minds think alike"

For example, once I got lost in my own neighborhood. My friend said, "Sounds like something Einstein would do". I would respond, "Great minds think alike!".

Or let's say I show up at a small party and I surprise everyone by dying my hair pink, and someone else also dyed their hair but neither of us expected the other person to have dyed hair. When we both got to the party and saw each others hair we might say, "Oh you dyed your hair too?!?" "Yep! Great minds think alike!"

dlr,

I can't remember any.

For your first example (with Einstein), I simply can't think of any translation.

For the second one, if I had dyed my hair pink and met someone who had done the same, I would probably say: "Que bom gosto!" - ironically, of course, just to say that she has a good taste (about dying her hair) just because this is the same taste as mine.

Em novembro de 2008 este fórum discutiu essa questão. Lá alguém sugeriu "Os tolos nunca estão em desacordo".

Márcio, I guess you got confused because they were discussing two different expressions there. This suggestion of translation was referring to "Fools never differ", not "Great minds think alike".

The fact is that all the translations suggested there were just a way to try to explain the meaning of the idioms. There are no equivalent idioms in Pt for this (as far as I know).

Once more: one can understand it, but I've never heard it around here ;)

dlr,
I see no problem in translate it literally, like "Grandes mentes pensam igual" in your examples.I see nothing wrong using this expression translated.

That may be dlr , but I think I'd say - Grandes mentes pensam da mesma forma, instead. That sounds much more Portuguese.

Once again, galera: I can't think of any sentence that "igual" would be used like an adverb like this.

"Igual" is an adverb only when you're comparing two (or more) things, and a preposition is needed after it.

Flavia and Gabi think alike.
Flávia e Gabi pensam da mesma forma.
Flávia e Gabi pensam igual --> WRONG. Isso não é língua portuguesa!
Flávia pensa igual à Gabi (or vice versa)

Ok, me corrigindo:

Flávia e Gabi pensam igual. --> Correto. :(

From Houaiss Dictionary:
■ advérbio
9 igualmente, sem distinção
Ex.: ele trata todo mundo igual.

(But I still think it sounds really weird and for this reason I recommend you use "da mesma forma" instead of "igual")

Fiquei pensando que fosse "Flávia e Gabi pensam iguais."

(I'm just adding fuel to the fire here...)

Expert's minds think alike, and that's all.

Flávia e Gabi pensam igual...sim, according to the Dict. it's correct, I guess
we just found it weird to say because it's not usually said,

Flávia e Gabi pensam da mesma forma rs

Either this or that, both are correct...end of story
os gênios se entendem.

hope it've helped
Great minds (think alike) used humorously when you and another person have had the same idea.

Não vejo o absurdo na tradução proposta anteriormente pelo companheiro.

Joilson.

Obviously there`s some difference of opinion here between great minds...

How do you say in Portuguese, "The more the merrier."

"Quanto mais melhor" ?

I'm not sure I got the real meaning of the saying.

I think you got it. It's the kind of thing you say when more and more people join in at a party, for ex.. It can also be satirical, when more people get into the act than shouldn't. (I was thinking "party" above, not being satirical...)
