Question: Have you ever dreamed in English?

Answer:

Yes. Once I dreamed I was studying in Philadelphia (although I had never planned to go there). After the class I met my host mother in a snack bar, we had lunch together, talked about the class and then we walked towards her house.
After waking up I realized I’ve already been to that house and that it is quite far from Philadelphia (and quite close to my house, by the way).

Now it’s your turn!

Flavia,

I learned something new from your post! I was going to suggest that the word "host" be used in it possesive sense (host's) but decided to exercise due diligence before I risked catching the famously dreaded "foot in mouth disease". My research imparted the knowledge that "host mother" is correct and is a type of surrogate mother, in this case for an exchange student.

Thank you for helping me to expand my vocabulary, and proving that even native English speakers can learn from "EE".
By the way, as a nitpick, the idiom "by the way" is usually used as an introduction at the begining of a thought.

Suggested words for the curious to look up to improve their vocabulary.

You learned one, I learned four (words+idiom). That's been a good exchange, indeed ;)

Hi Flá, this is a good topic, you know.

Yes. Once I dreamed in english. To explain exactly the situation, firstly I guess this happened because I had a hard day in my job. At that day there were some foreigners here at a conference Brazil x Canadá and when I got home I just fell asleep and the dream has started.

I didn't know almost nothing about the English Language, I had just started to take my english classes and get a job where I could improve my English skills. So, throughout the day I was listening a lot of employees talking in english and in spite of I wasn't be able to get everything they were talking to each other. I started to listen and understand everything as a miracle, thereafter I got to the conference I started to discuss about the project we've done for the growing to the company following the budget and the tremendous forecast. (I guess Flávia's used to do that at hers conferences.)

Well, after my presentation/performance as the Financial Director was everything's going fine the company's president enjoyed the idea about the anual budget and that's it!

And highlighting my presentation has been done in English.

Bye.

Finance Director? May I send you my CV? :D

Your dream was just a forecast of what you've been striving to reach. At least this is what I see here in the forum.
Keep up the good work!
Logan18 1
Yeah, Financial Director, Did you like?
You don't need to send me a CV, I'm sure you'll be the right and able applicant for this vacancy. Don't you think I'll remember to phone you for any opened vacancy for other Director's position?

Who knows I can call you and tell you news about my carreer when I get to be Financial Director.

I really hope you get first!

Logan,

I think I understand what you are saying and would like to make it a little clearer through a rewrite.

"Yes. Once I dreamed in english. To exactly explain the situation I need to state that I had a very hard day at my job, because that day some Canadians were here for a conference with the Brazilians and I was so tired when I got home that I almost immediately fell asleep and started to dream.

In my dream, I knew almost nothing about the English language as I had just started English classes and gotten a job where I could improve my English skills. Then throughout the day as I listened to the employees talking in English I started to understand some of what they were saying, and as the day went on I, almost miraculously, began to understand everything being said. Soon thereafter I discussed the budget and a realistic but optimistic forecast for a project that we had designed to allow the company to grow at an accelerated rate.

As the company's Chief Financial Officer, I presented the the budeget and expansion plan in English, which delighted and impressed the company's President who then approved the budget and expansion plans as I had presented them.

Bye"

If you do not understand the "whys and wherefores" of the above please let me know.

For the curious look up the following to augment your vocabulary.
Get, Got, and Gotten for both American English and British English
accelerated
augment
"Whys and Wherefores" an idiom

And for the very curious :ugeek: , "Please indulge my laquacious dissertation." ;) :D

The forum is FULL of very very very curious people.
Flavia,

Are you implying that I am analytcal and inquisitive or insinuating that I am bizarre and weird? Or am I infering something that is as nonexistent, as my dreams in Portuguese?

I took the liberty to change the question to "Have you ever dreamed in Portuguese?" since all my dreams are in English. :)

Lots of words for the inquisitive. :D
No! And I never thought it would be good, but now I think it would. I want (:

* * * My Dreams Are Mute * * *

I can wake up and say what I and the other people in my dream were talking about, but IN the dream no one says a single word, we may laugh, scream... whatever, but no words.

Yes, I have. Every once in a while I have dreams in English, but unfortunately when I wake up I am not able to recall what I was saying in it. On one occasion, I was speaking in my English class and on the second one I was travelling abroad and speaking to the foreigners I had met there. :D

Me, I keep having recurrent dreams about my co-workers. In one such dream one of my female co-workers fondled my hair. The following night's sleep had me dreaming of my gorgeous ex-personnel manager. She wore a bathing suit and would look back over her right shoulder at me. As in all my dreams either symptomatically or pragmatically I could never hear what the characters uttered, if anything. (I don't think the characters would [bother to] hear me either.)
I'm not complete sure if i have but normally i don't coz i have this blockade with fiding words and make right sentences.I'm not used to think in english that much,I already know ,and it's now something automatic, that when i write or read something i do not translate it.I think i keep doing this i'll start dream in english as soon as possible.

OMG! Thought I was the only one, haha. Now I see it's pretty normal.
I've already dreamed I was talkin' in english with all the people in the dream itself. It's really nice when you wake up and you realize "My God, I knew how to say words that I've never even really known yet" HSAUSHUAHUAS
I can't remember any of those dreams, but I'm sure I said a lot of things that I don't even think 'bout now, like goin' after these words I don't actually know yet. But however, it's a very nice experience.
Ah, I know how to speak French too, so I already had an entire dream in French. But of course, it was much more complicated. KKKKKKKKKKKK
No, I haven't ever dreamed in inglish. But a few times I dreamed with a complete piece of work of classic music. Even an opera. Quite marvellous! I tryied to reproduce it on my mind after I waked up, but it lasted just a little. The melody sounded so sharp in certain moments that I couldn't sing. If the brain could be registred in the future maybe I'll have lots of contributes to do. I have already dreamed about architecture and furniture designs. Even waked up, daydreaming, I've seen in my mind quite exquisites shoes and awsome car designs. I'm a high top artist in this lack of imagination.

Flavia,

I would like to offer some suggestions to improve your post. They will be in the form of a rewrite, and I would appreciate if you would let me know what you think about it and if it helped you.

"No I have never dreamed in English. But a few times have I dreamed with a complete work of classical music, and once with an opera in the dream, the experience was quite marvellous. I tried to reproduce the music in in my mind after I awakened, but the memory lasted only a short time. The melody was so sharp at certain times that I could not sing along.

In the future if the brain's thoughts could be registered while sleeping maybe I'll be able to make contributions in architecture, furniture design, shoe design and automotive styling as I have dreamed about exqisite examples in each of these fields."

Thank you for considering my suggestions, I hope you are able to profit from the rewrite.
No, I've never dreamed in English.. I wish someday dream in English, because once a friend told me that we just really know other language only when we dream in this language.

Well, actuallyl last month I dreamed that I was at my first english school! :D So we were talking in English, can it be? hhauhauhaiusdha
Heartbeatsound,

I would like to suggest that when writing in English you do not drop the "g" in words like talking and going, also it would be better if you did not drop the "a" in about. I realize that many Americans drop those letters when talking however it is incorrect while speaking and even worse in writing. I firmly believe that we, as students, should strive to use the proper form and avoid slang at all times.

Otherwise your post was very good. Nice work.

Israel,

You might want to consider the following suggestions hidden in my rewrite of the above post.

"Well, if I have ever dreamed in English I don't remember doing so, but I hope to do so someday.
Also I would like to thank Bill for helping us so much here on the forum. ..."

You and all my friends at EE are more than welcome. Now at the risk of getting in trouble with Flavia Im ;) , Por Nada Minha Amigas, and Meu Amigos :D . I will continue offering suggestions as long as I feel that I am helping my friends in their English studies, therefore your feedback and comments on my posts are important to me.
THe very first time I dreamt in English was when I was in London, for an exchange program. It was awesome! That was when I realized I could think in English!!
You see, Bill? That's what I'm talking about.
Thank you. :)
I think I have never dreamed in english...(Usually I don't remember my dreams). It should be very cool, I hope it happens to me soon :D

Well, if I have dreamed once, I just can't remember. Actually, I can barely remember my dreams in Portuguese...

But, if does it work as a confort thought, I catch me up thinking and speaking in english around the corners sometimes.

It would be surely really nice to dream in English (and also in French, as I'm studying both languages ;) ).

Laryssa,

"Please consider the following rewrite and let me know if you understand why I made the changes that I did.

If I have dreamed in English I can not remember it, actually, I can barely remember my dreams in Portuguese.

But if I do someday, it will be a comforting thought, because I sometimes catch myself thinking and speaking in English without realizing it.

Good luck in your studies.
Hey, Bill!

Thank you for your support! I really appreciate that.

I'm not that good in English because I've been learning it by myself at home since I was 8 years old, so my vocabulary doesn't go as far as that and I have some problems with grammar. However, I don't think you got what I was trying to say when I wrote "if does it work as a comfort thought, blablablabla".

I was intending to say that "thinking and speaking in English without realizing it" works as a comfort thought, got it?

Anyway, thank you, Bill! :)

PS: By the way, did I write my signature in the right way?
Laryssa,

Your signature is just fine, however I would prefer your corrected sentence to use comforting thought rather than comfort thought.

Thanks for replying and correcting my misunderstanding of what thoughts you were trying to convey.
