Question: How often do you see your family doctor?
Answers:
- I have regular checkups,
- Only when something is wrong,
- Never,
- Every week, I'm a hypocondriac,
- I don’t have a family doctor and I strongly believe that having one is not very common around here lately. But I do have regular checkups, especially pap test and ultrasound scans – and all girls should do the same!
Now it's your turn!

At 56, I haven't seen my doctor since 2007. Now, a couple of days ago I had a case of sudden water loss. Had to go see a doctor on my health care plan. To make a long story short, I came away from there alive... ready to succumb to another sudden water loss.
Thank God you can always fall back on your doctor, when the going gets tough... and the tough gets going.

Márcio... isn't it you that works IN A HOSPITAL?
Flavia, yes, I work in a hospital. And yes again, I have had to go seek medical help at the same hospital I work in, all during daytime. A recent case of lost water, however, caught me unawares at night, at home, and I had to go seek help at another local hospital. (I could barely drive the car to get there.)
BTW I work in a non ER hospital. It has no emergency ward.

Hello,
I don't have a family doctor, but this fact is not some reason to don't have regular checkups. I am not used to have checkups, to be honest, I do it only when something is wrong and it is not usual, since by far my health is good and I would like it keeps up like that forever.
I just think we have to have checkups before been on the brink of a collapse, otherwise some simple problem would be out of hand.
See you!

Having a "family doctor" is pretty much a Canadian custom. In fact, no specialist will see you unless you're referred by a general practitioner, or are already in hospital under an emergency. So family doctors are pretty much the "gateway" to all other medical specialties. With electronic records becoming common, he will also receive reports of any contacts you may have had with other doctors. This gives your family doctor a fairly rich picture of your health status. Best of all, in Canada, if you're a resident, you'll never be billed for any of these services.

Here in the United States, like Canada, a family doctor is almost a necessity, although they are usually refered to as a "Primary Care Physicans". Also like Canada most specialists will not see a patient who is not referred by a "PCP" or an Emergency Room Physician. Unlike Canada, in most cases we need health insurance or the ability to pay for health services, with the exception of emergency room services. However having insurance or other means to pay will reduce the amount of time required to obtain services other than in the emergency room. For example when my PCP referred me to a Cardiologist, and I had an appointment the next day, and the following day I had an echocardiogram, and my insurance paid 100% of the costs, since I have no copays or deductables.
But I am getting off topic, I see my family doctor (PCP) two times a month, my cardiologist every three months, my urogolist twice a year, and my internist and opthamologist yearly. Some times I hate all the medical appointments that are required with age, but they are better than the alternative.

My family doesn't have a particular doctor. I attend the doctor once in a blue moon.
I would like to suggest that you use "see" in place of "attend", while attend is technically correct it is awkward especially in speech, most Americans would use see.Educr1 escreveu:My family doesn't have a particular doctor. I attend the doctor once in a blue moon.
Otherwise nicely done.
Is it okay to mention a PDOC?
I've been fighting depression for years and every week I must see my PDOC and talk to him about my feelings. Well, I'm not taking meds any more but my mother and my doc still thinks I need therapy.
If you don't know what a "PDOC" is:

"Meds" definition: como-dizer-remedios-em-ingles-t14143.html
