  • I don´t know if I´m going to school tomorrow. (dúvida)
  • He asked me if I knew the way to San Diego. (dúvida)
  • If you don´t study hard, you´ll fail your test. (condição)
  • I´ll let you go to the party only if you promise me you´ll be back by 11. (condição)
O if pode ser substituído por whether nas frases que expressam dúvida:
  • I don´t know whether I´m going to school tomorrow.
  • He asked me whether I knew the way to San Diego.

I don't know whether I'm going to school or to the beach...

R.Star,

- I don´t know whether I´m going to school tomorrow.
- He asked me whether I knew the way to San Diego
I would like to know the difference between 'if' and 'whether', and which one I should use here:

"The teacher put me on the spot when she asked if/whether I had studied for the test (or not)."

Thanks in advance...

No caso apresentado, tanto "whether" quanto "if" podem ser usados. [''...she asked if/whether I had studied for the test (or not)."]

Veja o que diz o Oxford Online:
''Both if and whether are used in reporting questions which expect ‘yes’ or ‘no’ as the answer: She asked if/whether I wanted a drink., although whether sounds more natural with particular verbs such as discuss, consider and decide. When a choice is offered between alternatives if or whether can be used: We didn’t know if/whether we should write or phone. In this last type of sentence, whether is usually considered more formal and more suitable for written English.''

Mais dicas:
After Prepositions

Use only whether after prepositions:

Examples:

We talked about whether we should go or not.
I looked into whether he should stay.

Infinitives

Use only whether before infinitives:

Examples:

She can't decide whether to buy the house or wait.
He considered whether to give up the position or quit next year.

Exemplo:

You'll pass in the test if you study.

I don't know whether she really likes me or not.

I don't know whether it is cobalt or manganese.
If it is cobalt, it isn't manganese.

"Yeah, that's the problem. So I haven't decided whether to take the job or not."...
