Tenho tido grandes dúvidas em relação ao uso desse advérbio. Qual das frases a seguir parece mais coerente?

1- Instead to tell her the truth, I'd rather run away;
2- Instead of telling her the truth, I'd rather run away;

Soa muito estranho quando o "Instead" é posto no início da frase?

3- I'd rather run away instead to tell her the truth;
4- I'd rather run away instead of telling her the truth;

Instead of telling her the truth, I'd rather run away;
I'd rather run away instead of telling her the truth;
onde "instead of" é uma preposição.

Uma preposição requer um objeto:
Em "Instead of telling her the truth", "the truth" é o objeto da preposição "instead of".

"Instead" como advérbio não é seguido de "objeto". Exemplo:
I don't want to tell her the truth. Instead, I'd rather run away.
