BRADLEY THOMAS,

You should be extra careful when reading this book because the dialogue mentioned is an example of archaic English. It is commonly used in an earlier time but rare in present-day usage except to suggest the older time, as in religious rituals or historical novels, but do not help us in usual conversation.

I'm sorry if I was impertinent, but I prefer to let you warned in case you and our friends here at English Experts are trying to study English reading Ron Chernow's book, Grant.

Find the answers below:

Lawd is an archaic alternative spelling of the word Lord.

I's is a contraction of I is, an erroneous way to say I am. In Literature, it is usually written I'se as an attemp to transcribe the putative dialect of uneducated rural people in 1800's. Just to remind you that Chernow's book is a 2017 biography of Ulysses S. Grant, the 18th President of the United States from 1869 to 1877. The contraction is no longer used in modern speech and using it would sound bizarre and antiquated. It has more of a poetic connotation as it is almost exclusively found in older English literature.

Afeerd is another archaic word. It is an alternative form of the British words afeard or affeared. Both are the past and the past participle forms of the verb to affear, which means to frighten or make afraid.

To be onto someone is an informal expression. It means to be looking for someone.

The word massa was used chiefly in representation of southern African-American speech. It is an offensive variation of marse or master. It is associated with slavery in the United States. However, depending on the context, the word can also mean multitude, mass, throng, crowd.

Take a look:

Lawd, I's afeerd massa 'll be onto me. [Archaic]

1st conotation: My Lord, I am afraid my master will be onto me.
>> Meu senhor, receio que meu mestre virá atrás de mim.

2nd conotation: My Lord, I am afraid the crowd will be onto me.
>> Meu senhor, receio que a multidão virá atrás de mim.

Be onto sbd = To know that a specific person did sth wrong or illegal -

I's - Eu realmente não sei. Mas pode ser uma corruptela de I was . Então eu
