"I was stung by a bee".

From what I have seen, a wasp does not sting so hard as a hornet does, both of which, however, will beneficially help a farmer kill off many of the parasites that infest his crop.

I have seen the dark red tropical wasp fly around here (here = Pernambuco inlands), one of which once stung me as I disastrously attempted to sweep its nest off the ceiling.

But give a wide berth to hornets. Black and yellow hornets can send a guy reeling in pain much more dramatically than a wasp can. And man, do they sting!

Hornets usu. Grow bigger than wasps.

Not oddly enough, entomology, the branch of zoology that studies insects, would rather refer to spiders, scorpions and all kinds of biting ticks as "animals" than outright lump them on the insect category sheet. (Of course, entomology justly classifies these as Arachnida.)

On with the insect list, though.

Titan beetle (Titanus giganteus) = Besourão. Adult species may grow up to 22 cm and weigh 70 g. Titan beetles live in the tropical rain forest. Their mandibles can snap pencils in half and painfully cut into human flesh. Don't let them bite you.
