1. "Lives" = verb
Family lives with lions. = It lives with lions.
(a) Família vive / mora com leões.
(b) Família convive com leões.
"Lives" é a conjugação do verbo (To) live.
Os verbos são conjugados no Present Simple Tense quando descrevem a ação da 3ª pessoa do singular (He - She - It).

You are comparing orange with apples; see, the plural of "live" is "lives" but we are talking about life as per definition of the Cambridge Dictionary.
So, in "family lives with lions" it will be translated into "familia vive com leões".
Now that we know that it´s a verb, used in the present, then we conjugate it in the third person singular the following way:
He lives...
She lives...
It lives...
Back to the subject of the sentence, FAMILY. We can replace it by IT, so FAMILY LIVES (IT LIVES). The letter S here is about conjugation, not plural.
